MEL BONIS (1858-1937)
Le Ruisseau,
Op. 21 No. 1 (1894) Lyrics: Amédée-Louis Hettich
(1856-1937)
The Stream Through meadows in bloom
rushes a stream Where the birds come to drink songs,
Tapping with their beaks to break open the shells
Of water-pearls that leap in tandem with their flight.
Still, at times, weary of its course, The poor
brook stops to cry. The rock, moved to see such
sadness, Softens its bosom and embraces The
stream, who, in turn, never ceases to flee!
O
stream, so fresh and clear, Where the moon, at night,
bathes its pale brow, Tell me, to which oak-bound
shores Are your waves taking you? Where are you
going, kind brook?
“I flow ever onward without a
goal, obeying my fantasy, Like thought, like desire;
I strive toward the unknown; I never pin myself down,
And thus I fulfill my destiny.
‘Tis the
unknown I embrace when I sing; I follow it whenever I
dream, Or when I lazily embrace And caress the
charming body of Amaryllis!”

La Siesta CG 399 (1871) Lyrics:
Anonymous
With the wind, O Mother, The leaves
murmur, And I fall asleep to its sound Under their
shadow!
A gentle wind blows, Cheerful and
soft, Propelling the ship, The ship of my thoughts.
It brings me such joy That it already seems As
if Heaven was granting me Its bliss in advance.
And I fall asleep to its sound Under the leaves’
shadow.
I hardly recall, Now that I lie amidst
flowers, All my pains. I barely remember them.
They disappear from view, Now that sleep overpowers me,
And life returns to me With the sound of the leaves
And I fall asleep to the sound of the wind Beneath
their shadow!
